A Little Something Something

Toronto Afrobeat/funk collective Mr. Something Something will release their new album Deep Sleep featuring Ikwunga The Afrobeat Poet on Tuesday October 30th. For the new record,Mr. Something Something has added an element that was missing from their excellent 2005 release The Edge, a genuine Nigerian afrobeat poet in the tradition of the Black President, Fela Kuti. Ikwunga, now living in Baltimore, has the experience of opening shows for Fela's son, Femi at his club in Lagos in the 1990s. The new album incorporates traditional Afrobeat stylings and spoken word poetry with the band's more modern take on Afrobeat. Mr Something Something's uncanny ability to mix genres (Funk/Afrobeat/Reggae) into pulsating rhythms continues with this release and I'm looking forward to these songs being performed live with Ikwunga when they next come out to the West Coast.
